Sustainable development and sustainable mobility Peugeot
SUSTAINABILITY
DESIGN
INNOVATION AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES
From the design phase through to the end-of-life of the vehicles, PEUGEOT strives to limit their impact on the environment. In addition to respecting environmental standards, PEUGEOT aims to lead the way in sustainable mobility and therefore devotes substantial means towards reducing the ecological footprint of its vehicles.
TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS
PEUGEOT continues to work on the optimisation of petrol and diesel thermal powertrains (including the deployment of Stop & Start mechanisms).
Through Hybrid4 technology we enable the association of internal combustion engines and electric propulsion.
The PEUGEOT e-208 and PEUGEOT e-2008 are 100% electric and offer responsible urban mobility.
GREEN MATERIALS
Groupe PSA is aiming for leadership in this field, with 30% of green materials per vehicle on average (recycled metals, green materials polymers etc.). It goes without saying that these new materials are selected in compliance with quality and safety requirements.
Groupe PSA pays a particular attention to the use of green materials in the polymers. These are recycled plastics, natural fibres or bio sourced materials (polymers obtained from renewable resources). Their use allows us to cut down on plastics of fossil origin while diversifying the activities of the plastic recycling channels.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGN
DESIGNED WITHIN A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVE
In terms of product development, PEUGEOT's recycling strategy revolves around two axes:
- Design with a view to sustainable development
- Development and implementation of material cycles for vehicle production
INTEGRATED PRODUCT RESPONSIBILITY:
Development :
- Life cycle assessments
- Selection of materials focused on sustainable development
Production :
- Use of recycled materials (recyclates)
Use :
- Disposal by concessions (waste management)
- Spare parts
Valuation:
- Vehicle valuation
- Depollution and pre-treatment
- European ELV Directive
To ensure that all PEUGEOT products meet our recycling targets, all PEUGEOT design teams must follow “recyclability/recovery” guidelines.
This process also allows engineers to assess how easily parts, components, etc., can be recycled at the end of the vehicle's life.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGN:
- Selection of materials focused on sustainable development
- Depollution
- Pretreatment
For some time now, PEUGEOT has been using recycled materials, also called "recycled products", and their use is constantly increasing. The Group is continuing its efforts to meet its commitment to build vehicles containing 30% recycled materials or biomaterials. From a technical point of view, significant efforts have been made to increase the amount of recycled materials used.
Recycled products must meet the same technical requirements as virgin products. Recycled materials are preferred as long as they do not increase the price of the part. Quality is never compromised. Our recycling team makes every effort to maintain quality aesthetics and mechanical and thermal durability, but also to guarantee performance standards.
In fact, our recycled materials are of such quality that they can now be used both for the visible parts of PEUGEOT vehicles and for the hidden parts.
MANUFACTURING
All our production plants have obtained ISO 14001 certification. This standard (created in 1996) requires plants to: monitor, control and measure the effects of processes on the environment. It engages staff in a process of continuous improvement through appropriate training in environmental protection.
REPAIR AND MANAGEMENT OF PRODUCT WASTE
The PEUGEOT network is committed to four major criteria in terms of environmental management:
- Sorting and collection of vehicle waste produced by the maintenance and repair activities of our network of garages by approved organisations.
- Network compliance with national and European regulations.
- Total traceability of vehicle waste until recycling.
- The sorting and collection of waste produced by maintenance and repair activities are organized according to the brand's methods for managing end-of-life products.
STANDARD EXCHANGE: A SUPERIOR QUALITY SOLUTION
AN ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL SOLUTION
In addition, you will thus participate in our commitment to the protection of the environment, recycling and the limitation of vehicle waste.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF END-OF-LIFE PRODUCTS RECYCLING OF END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES
RETURN OF YOUR PEUGEOT END OF USE VEHICLE
The last holder hands over the end-of-life vehicle to one of our collection partners. After checking the vehicle, our partner issues the necessary certificate of destruction.
Pre-treatment and depollution
First, the battery is removed and the airbags are deactivated. Our recovery partner then removes all fuels and other liquids from end-of-life vehicles. This includes engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and air conditioning fluid.
Disassembly
The next step is to disassemble the components and systems to sell them as used parts or use them as the basis for remanufactured parts. If economically viable, materials such as plastic and glass are removed for recycling.
Storage location
Materials representing a danger to the environment are collected and then sent to companies specializing in recovery for recycling or disposal.
The pre-treated carcasses are transported to a shredder which separates the materials from end-of-life vehicles and sorts them for recycling or recovery.
Post-grinding technologies
The fractions thus obtained are then processed using various technologies (magnetic, eddy currents, flotation) to extract fractions of materials that can be used as secondary raw materials.
Recycling/recovery/disposal
The fractions of materials produced by the crusher and thanks to post-crushing technologies can be recycled (for example, to replace coal in blast furnaces or for the drying of sewage sludge) or recovered by the cement industry. This process recovers 95% of the vehicle and significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills.
TAKE-BACK NETWORK - RECYCLE YOUR PEUGEOT
We have always done our best to respect the environment, but today recycling is no longer an option: it is a legal obligation enshrined in national end-of-life vehicle regulations. This recycling approach requires manufacturers to reduce the amount of waste generated by the production of vehicles and at the end of their life cycle.
PEUGEOT owners can contact a representative of the PEUGEOT network to return their vehicle when it has reached the end of its life. This service is free and subject to certain conditions (see below).
We want to make sure that your end-of-life vehicle is recycled in an environmentally responsible way. That's why we make sure that all of our take-back sites meet the legal requirements of end-of-life vehicle regulations. All of our vehicle take-back partners, processes and documentation of all incoming and outgoing material flows are also audited by our recycling experts.
The free return of your out of order PEUGEOT only applies in the following cases:
- None of the essential components or parts are missing
- The vehicle does not contain non-automotive waste
- The vehicle has up to 9 seats or is a light commercial vehicle of a maximum of 3.5 tonnes
- The vehicle was last registered in the EU
- The original vehicle documents were handed over with the vehicle
Return your end-of-life vehicle to our trade-in partner who will give you a certificate of destruction and the documents necessary to cancel its registration. You will leave with the certainty that your old car will be destroyed with the greatest respect for the environment.
